It’s a Sign!

The credit card payment didn’t take on the first try, so I’m not meant to do this program.

I typed in the email address wrong once, so I wasn’t supposed to write and ask for this favor.

I misdialed the phone, so I wasn’t supposed to make that call today.

I do believe in the power of providence. I believe that sometimes the guiding hand of Spirit reaches out, and saves us from ourselves. And I am grateful for these interventions.

I also believe that it’s far too easy to let fear stop you as you pursue a path of stepping up. When you’re contemplating creating big and busting loose, what better way to protect yourself than to look for any excuse as a ‘sign’ you aren’t supposed to?

If you believe you shouldn’t sign up for that training program because you mis-typed your credit card number, then look at your fears. What’s really challenging you here?

I’m guessing it’s one of these:

  • I’m afraid I won’t succeed.
  • I’ll get into this and won’t follow through.
  • I’ll look stupid if I can’t do it right.
  • If this doesn’t work, there is no hope left.
  • This could prove that I’m really a failure.
  • It’s a big investment – I should just work on this in a cheaper way.

If you find one of these lurking, then address that first, before you decide if there’s really a spiritual message for you.

You can also look at it another way: if the Universe throws up barriers, maybe it’s testing your resolve. Maybe someone out there knows that the way will be a little tough, but SO worth it, and wants to make sure you’re not going to get halfway down the road and give up. So a little resistance, a few obstacles, and presto – your tenacity gauge gets set at ‘Not giving up!’

And that’s a powerful way to start anything.

The worst fear in the world!

Did you know that the fear of public speaking is stronger than the fear of death for many people?

Yet public speaking is one of the best things that you can do to grow your business! Getting over this fear can mean the difference between getting clients and making money, and staying the ‘best-kept secret’.

If you’re one of the many people who struggle with this, I’ve put together a tapping video to help you with your fear of public speaking.

Enjoy!

If I want it, I should get it

Back when I used to play the harp, and sell my husband’s hand-crafted harps as part of my business, I frequently heard ‘I want to play the harp!’

It surprised me that so few of the people who expressed this sentiment, some of them quite passionately, never went on to actually play. Why not?

They weren’t willing to:

1) Save up the money and invest in an instrument

2) Put forward the time and effort to learn to play

3) Look like a beginner as they were learning

I see the same thing now that I’m a business coach. I hear transformational entrepreneurs say ‘I want a six-figure business!’ but so many never achieve it. The reasons are the same. They aren’t willing to invest in the training or coaching, or to look like a beginner as they are learning the ropes, or they don’t want to put in the effort to do things that are uncomfortable. (Of course I believe that the way to success is to use tapping to GET comfortable with what you need to do, so success is easier – but even that takes work.)

It’s the nature of being human that we want many things – some we want idly, as the attraction of the moment, and some we passionately desire. But what separates those who succeed from those who merely want is the commitment to turn WANTING into CREATING.

You CREATE when you are willing to:

1) Dream big – bigger than your current life

2) Devote resources to pursue that dream

3) Don’t give up when it gets tough

Nothing worth getting was ever gotten with no challenges. In overcoming those challenges, you become the person who is worthy of what you desire, who easily attracts it, who is a vibrational match for it. Does this mean that creating it will be easy?

The truth is – you’re not creating IT. You’re creating YOU – the you that can achieve it.

What do you want to create?

90% is not enough

When I’m teaching clients how to sell, I tell them to sit in the pain with their prospective clients. It’s not until someone really feels the pain of their situation that they are motivated to transform their situation, and it’s only then that they become willing to hire from, or buy from you.

That’s what you do with prospective clients. But what about you? What is the area of transformation that you’ve been putting off? Where are you living at 90% (or perhaps only 50%) but not taking action?

This can show up in many ways. In business, for example: Perhaps it’s putting up with not making the money that you know you deserve, but not taking the action to raise your rates or reach more people. This happens when you don’t get the support or training that you need, because that investment would be out of your comfort zone.

Or maybe you’re only living at 90% in your life. You haven’t gotten in shape, or started that eating plan, or you’re still tolerating relationships that don’t support you, or you haven’t cleared the clutter from your home or office… the list can go on and on.

Here are three things to check, to see where you’re still living at less than 100%:

1) You’ve been telling yourself that effort is more important than results.

Imagine a child who is unwilling to put his face in the water trying to swim the length of a pool. He can dog paddle, splashing around using lots of energy, but he won’t get very far very fast, because he’s not willing to do something uncomfortable to move forward fast. For many entrepreneurs, this shows up as being unwilling to invest hundreds of dollars, or a few thousand, in order to make back six figures. If you don’t invest in yourself, you can put in a lot of effort and still get mediocre results. Don’t pat yourself on the back for working hard – instead, figure out what you need to do to get the results

2) You’re tolerating people or situations that don’t serve you.

Maybe it’s friends who encourage you to play small, or habits that keep you from being productive or deeply enjoying life. Maybe you know you need to start exercising or meditating, turn off the TV, or clear the clutter, but it’s just always been that way and it’s too darn much trouble to change. Or perhaps you need to walk away from that ‘friend’ who keeps giving you messages of poverty, lack, and unworthiness. Yes, it’s initially more uncomfortable, but worth the reward.

3) You’re sticking your head in the sand, and completely ignoring a potential problem area.

The big area for most entrepreneurs to ignore is keeping their books, and structuring their business like a business. Getting support from a bookkeeper, accountant, and/or financial advisor can seem boring and unimportant, but it’s VITAL to your success.

Just to be clear – I strongly recommend that you spend time every day celebrating your successes – that’s SO important to continuing to grow and create new success.

But you also need to look at what’s not working, not to beat yourself up or hold yourself back, but as a simple acknowledgement of what’s next for you. It’s not always fun to look at the areas that you need to improve. But once you make a commitment and get into action, you’ll feel great, you’ll be powerful – and you’ll get results.

The one sure-fire marketing answer

Have you been looking for the one sure-fire marketing answer? I know I’ve spent a lot of time looking for that!

You may be wondering – is it social media? Blogs? Networking events? Videos?

I did actually find the one sure-fire marketing answer – but it wasn’t what I expected. Here’s a video to help you find it, too:

The moment that will change your life

I’ve had the privilege in my work to see and acknowledge people for playing big – for stepping up, and taking risks in creating the businesses and lives that they want. I’ve also seen people, excited and motivated in the moment, who then back away from their dreams.

I realized that there is a profound difference between those who, in a moment of inspiration, make a commitment to do something extraordinary, and people who want to ‘think about it’. Over and over, I see that the people who ‘think about it’ don’t take action, and don’t get the results that they dream about. Once I thought about this, I realized why this is true.

In order to take an extraordinary action, you need to be inspired, swept up in excitement, and thinking outside the usual scope of what’s possible for you. You need to be dreaming, and motivated, and willing to consider the possibility that you could succeed in a way that is not predicted by your past.

Here’s the catch: No one, NO ONE, keeps this energy and attitude 100% of the time.

We can work to cultivate these beliefs, and use all of our many tools to live in this reality. But the truth is that we will alternate these moments of ‘I CAN do this!’ with ‘I’m terrified that I won’t succeed.’

Those who ‘think about it’ will, at some point during their thinking, be overcome by fear. And because it’s so much more comfortable and familiar to live where they are, they will not take extraordinary action. Not now, and not in the future. If you’ve been congratulating yourself because you always ‘think about it’ please consider that you are holding yourself back from the extraordinary. Because it takes inspiration to step into something that is ‘unreasonable’ – like the idea that you could start with nothing, and build a six-figure business in only a year, yet I’ve seen my clients do this.

Those who commit in the moment of inspiration will still feel fear at some point. However, once committed, the way out of fear is not back into comfort, complacency, and being broke. The way out of fear is moving forward, into success, and into a transformed business and life.

If you choose to be someone who commits in the moment of inspiration, not just once but as a way of life, you will have an extraordinary life.

Will you occasionally make mistakes? Probably. But what you gain from leaping into opportunity will far overshadow any mistakes. What you learn from the challenges will transform you into a person who succeeds, no matter what. You will be a person who risks big, plays big – and wins big. Honestly, there is no other way.

Ways to Save Money In Your Business – That Don’t

I’ve been privileged to have some interesting conversations with people about building their businesses. In every case, the people I was talking to wanted to make good business decisions, and save money, and be safe.

Unfortunately, the actions they took weren’t going to get them to their goals.

As a public service, I want to share a few myths that I see so many entrepreneurs believing – all for the best of reasons – but at the expense of their dreams.

Myth #1

Trading is a way to get great business services – free.

Truth: I know that many business gurus will suggest trading as a way to get some of the help that you need when you’re starting out. Maybe. But the message that you’re giving the Universe is ‘I can’t afford what I need’ every time you trade. If it’s an even trade, exchange the money instead – it will feel very different. If it’s an uneven trade – someone’s getting the short end of the stick. Don’t do that, it’s bad energy, regardless of which side of the stick you’re holding.

Here’s another way to look at it – If you wouldn’t pay money for it, don’t trade your even more precious time for it. You’ll spend all your time getting services but no money, and you can’t run a business that way.

Hidden Truth: Most people trade because they are afraid to ask people for money. And if you’re thinking ‘It’s so great that I can get these important services for free’ you’re badly undervaluing the cost of your time. That means, in a trade, you’re working for free, too. Is that the message you want to put out there? Why should anyone hire you, if you’re willing to work for free?

You also want to look at ‘You get what you pay for.’ If you’re getting all of this ‘for free,’ what’s it worth?

Myth #2

It’s not smart to go into debt to build your business.

Truth: Every entrepreneur needs to decide the level of risk that she can tolerate. For some, that will be very little. (People with low levels of risk tolerance tend to either change their level, or go back to the job market. It’s too stressful for them.) If you’re not willing to take on risk, you should look at getting out of the entrepreneurial world. Pretty much every aspect of running a business involves risk, and trying desperately to minimize it means that you stunt the growth of your business.

Hidden Truth: Every successful entrepreneur I know incurred debt to build their business. This doesn’t mean that it’s the right move for you, but you should consider whether you’re holding yourself back by not being willing to risk.

Myth #3

You can do it all without help.

Truth: If you’re doing it all in your business, you’re doing many things that are outside your area of expertise. That means you’re not working efficiently, and you’re putting your valuable time into a task that could be done much more effectively by someone with a different skill set.

Even assuming that you have the skill set to do everything in your business (a big assumption!) AND if you’re better at all of them than anyone else would be (a near impossibility) not all tasks are created equal. Mowing the grass, for example, is worth about $10/hour. If you usually charge $100/hour for your services, which is low for most entrepreneurs, any time you mow the lawn you’re wasting $90 that you could be making by investing that time in your business. You can apply this logic to all the other tasks in your business that would be better performed by an assistant.

Your assignment: Look at whether you’ve been believing these myths, and take a close look at what it’s costing you. The amount of money your saving could be used to create a huge return this year in your business.

6 Inconvenient Truths about Business

In building a business, there are so many activities to be scheduled – Client appointments, sales calls, networking events, learning opportunities, and mastermind meetings, just to name a few. Often these take time, money, and advance planning, and you may feel like putting out the extra effort just isn’t worth it, even if you know that attending an event will make a difference.

I’ve seen this pattern over and over. Here are the limiting thoughts that are hurting your business:

‘I’m doing so many other things, I can get away with not attending this event.’
‘I won’t really get much from it. I never do.’
‘I can’t invest that much in myself. I might not get it back.’
‘It’s just too inconvenient to work everything out.’

For those of you who are looking for truth in what it takes to run a business, you can take these to the bank.

  1. It’s never a convenient time to work on your business. Do it anyway.
  2. The money that you need for your next important business investment is probably not already sitting in your sock drawer. Figure it out, and invest anyway.
  3. You don’t need a positive mindset 100% of the time. You need to take action 100% of the time, and have a positive mindset during as much of that as possible.
  4. It won’t happen as fast as you want it to. But if you do #3, it will happen.
  5. Super-successful people will tell you that most success consists of showing up. And showing up. And showing up.
  6. Believing in yourself, and taking action consistent with that belief, is the best business strategy you can have.

The difference between you having to close your business, and you succeeding beyond  your wildest dreams can be as simple as showing up. Even when it’s not convenient.

Should Healing Be Free?

I received an email this week from one of my subscribers, saying that he wouldn’t participate in a very low-priced tapping offering because the people that he worked with (people with addictions, depression, etc) couldn’t afford it. He also said that the spirit of EFT was to be given away, not sold.

I hear this frequently from healers. There are some who believe that healing should be given away, and that to make money, especially to make more money than you need for subsistence living, is just wrong if you’re a healer. I disagree with this, and here’s why.

1) Just because some people can’t afford something doesn’t mean that it should be given away free to all. Some people can’t afford to shop at Walmart. Should Walmart give away their wares? I’m not arguing against charity – I believe strongly in giving back. I believe that businesses have a responsibility to charge for the transformation that they provide, and then give back in some way as well. But if you give it all away, you’re broke, out of business, and have NOTHING to give back. Jack Canfield taught me ‘When you’re poor, the good that you can do is limited to your physical presence.’ Jack taught me how to write multi-thousand dollar checks to charity. Wouldn’t you like to have more reach?

2) People value what they pay for. Period. I’ve seen it over and over again. Free resources go unused, dismissed, and de-valued – no matter how valuable – just because they are free. Giving tastes of what you do for free is great – it allows people to sample, experiment and lower their risk before they invest with you. EVERY wealthy EFTer I know, and unfortunately there aren’t many, gives away free support in some form. But giving everything away – or underpricing it – means that the transformation you provide will in many cases be ignored. And that’s a real shame. (It also creates an attitude of entitlement, which is currently rampant in the world and further disempowers people.)

3) You have to take care of yourself to do your work well. It may be true in healing that the work comes through you, not by you, and that you’re acting as a channel for Spirit. But if you’re constantly overworked, stressed about money, or not practicing good self-care because you don’t have the time or the resources, you’re not an effective healer/coach/practitioner. You do actually need to live well, take time off, eat good food, etc, in order to do your best work – the work that truly serves your clients and the world.

4) If you’re a healer, and you’re broke, it’s probably not because you’re chock-full of clients and not charging enough. It’s because you don’t have enough clients, which means you’re not helping as many people as you could. In order to truly help people, you need to get out, market yourself, grow your business, talk to people, be confident in what you do, and so much more. This takes time, energy, and yes – money. To do good, it takes cash. It’s been said ‘It took millions to keep Mother Teresa poor.’ She was constantly attracting money, although she didn’t choose to keep it for herself. Is your system working that well?

5) Poverty is not a status-symbol. Humans all have a need for status (this is a psychological fact.) There is always something that you are better at than someone else, and something that others are better at than you. Too many healers are claiming poverty as a status symbol, i.e. ‘I’m a better person because I’m not rich, in fact I’m barely scraping by.’ I’ll admit that I used to hold this mistaken, disempowering belief back when I was a musician. Because I couldn’t make that much money, I would denigrate those who did. It was petty. It’s not noble to be poor. Look for another way to feel good about yourself, rather than poverty.

If you want to be poor, you can. If you want to make more money, you can do that as well. Be aware that it’s a choice, and empower yourself by honoring both the choice that works for you, and the choice made by those who want to do more good in the world by becoming wealthy, and sharing their gifts.

Live Events – Should you go to them?

Going to conferences, workshops, and other live events can feel challenging. They take planning, time, energy and money. So why not stay home? In these days of virtual classes, social media connections, and video introductions, do we really need to get there in-person?

I believe that live events are a vitally important part of growing a successful business. Done right, they can be a veritable gold mine! Below you’ll find a list of why to go, and what to do when you get there so you can make the most of these terrific opportunities.

Why you need to go:

1) You need to get out of your house (and your old patterns) to build your business. If you spend your days in your office, behind your computer, you won’t get the mind-expanding, creativity-enhancing benefits of new surroundings and different people. Your brain will start running in ruts, and that will hurt your ability to respond quickly and creatively to new business situations.

2) Great networking. Despite social media and virtual connections, there is nothing like a face-to-face meeting to create a connection that you can leverage in your business. You can not only meet others, you can get a feeling for someone much better in person, and what they will be like to work with.

3) JV partnerships and business alliances. Like networking in general, connecting with potential partners over lunch, or coffee on a break is just easier.

4) New clients. If your target market is attending a conference, workshop, or other event – go there. It’s an easy way to connect with lots of people in your market, and make connections that you can follow up after the event for future business.

5) New ideas. At most conferences, unless you’re new in an industry, you’re likely to hear many ideas that you are already familiar with. However, you may hear them in a new way, or consider them in a new light. And then there is that one gem that leads to tens of thousands of new business, that you just wouldn’t have picked up any other way.

What to Do When You Get There:

6) Go with an intention. Make up your mind before you go what you’d like to get out of the event. Be open to being pleasantly surprised by other benefits, though.

7) Focus on being of service to others. Everyone’s usually looking out for themselves at an event, so if you are constantly asking people what they need, and what they are looking for, you’ll be memorable as very helpful.

8 ) Always have your business cards, and a pen. Then you can jot notes on other people’s cards as you receive them, or write helpful tips on your own card as you hand it out.

9) Pace yourself, and take care of your body. Although it’s tempting to party when you’re out of town, getting good sleep and eating reasonable food will allow you to have the most energy for both learning and connecting with people.

10) Follow up with people after you return home. Drop people an email offering your free gift, and telling them how much you enjoyed meeting them. (NOTE: Don’t put them on your emailing list uninvited- that’s spam.)

Going to live events can create a huge surge of new life in your business. Plan to go to at least one, or several, in your arena every year.
