Does this sound like you?

“I can’t charge more for my services, people won’t pay it.”

“I’m afraid to tell someone my fees – I try to avoid that part of the conversation.”

“I can’t charge more, because I couldn’t afford to pay that much myself.”

Last week I gave a teleclass on ‘Charging What You Deserve’. It was a packed house, and these are just some of the comments that came through the call and webcast.

In the work I do with transformational entrepreneurs (those who want to make a difference in the world while making a profit) I hear many, many limiting beliefs.

Most people don’t see their limiting beliefs as beliefs – they seem them as facts.

‘People just won’t pay more than I’m charging’ is one limiting belief.

The people who are currently paying you for your services may not pay more, but other people will.

There’s a reason that Volkswagons are priced under $20,000 and Mercedes are priced above $80,000. If someone walks up to a Mercedes and says ‘That’s ridiculous, no car is worth that much!’ then that person isn’t a Mercedes customer.

Are you serving the Volkswagon customers, or the Mercedes customers?

The belief ‘I’m afraid to tell someone my fees’ usually stems from a fear of rejection – ‘He won’t like me when he hears my fees’ or ‘When I quote my fees, she’ll think it’s all about the money, and that I don’t care’ or ‘He’ll say no, and I’ll be rejected.’

These are all limiting beliefs that lead to fear, and it’s hurting your business.

Here’s the secret:

ANY belief that doesn’t serve you can be changed.

When you grasp that, you have incredible power in your hands.

What’s a belief that’s limiting you that you’d like to change?

What if you shifted from ‘People won’t pay more than I’m charging’ to ‘What if people would pay more?’

This tiny shift opens up new possibilities, and actually re-trains your mind to think in a completely different, creative way.

There are many techniques for belief change, including Byron Katie’s ‘The Work’, The Sedona Method, and my favorite, Meridian Tapping Techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Which one you use doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that you NEVER allow yourself to be stopped by a limiting belief – what you do is too important.

Recently the movie phenomenon ‘Avatar’ broke all the records to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. It did this in an incredibly short period of only six weeks. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a visual feast (especially in 3D) with a rich, moving storyline. This movie could not have been made even five years ago – it relies on technology that simply wasn’t available then. What I love about it, in addition to the marvelous visuals, is that it has some important themes: That we are all spiritually, energetically connected to each other and the earth, and that it’s wrong and ultimately deadly for everyone to interfere with that connection.

You may see ‘Avatar’ as only entertainment, having nothing to do with your business, but I believe there are huge lessons that we can learn from this.

(1) The reason that Avatar is so successful has little to do with the themes I mentioned. It’s because it’s REALLY cool to watch.

(2) Even though it’s the 3D that got people to the theaters, all of them walked away having absorbed those important themes on some level.

Have you ever heard the saying ‘Sell them what they want, so you can give them what they need?’

If you’re trying to ’sell’ (market, offer) people what they need, you’re in for a long, unprofitable haul. Because you’re not speaking their language, you’re speaking your language. When you’re selling (marketing, offering) what they want, you’re speaking THEIR language. And they’ll listen.

Even if you throw in a little (or a lot) of what they need after the sale.

In order to sell them what they want, you need to listen to them, to be aware, to be tuned into what they are thinking, feeling, and believing.

In ‘Avatar’, the greeting is ‘I see you’, which means far more than just a visual confirmation. It’s more like the greeting ‘Namaste’ – the divine in me sees and honors the divine in you. Acknowledging all that is there, being aware of it, receiving it, being open to it.

If you could ’see’ your clients like this, what do you think would happen to your sales?

Maybe ‘Avatar’ is just a movie. Or maybe it’s a brilliant illustration of how to treat our customers, our colleagues, and our world – wrapped in a way-cool package.

Conscious, heart-centered entrepreneurs often struggle with the idea that effective marketing is hype-y, sales-y or inauthentic. And for some, there is actually a conflict, but the problem isn't with the marketing - it's within the entrepreneur. Here are three steps you can take to create authentic alignment between your beliefs and your marketing:

    (1) You must passionately believe both in what you do, and in yourself. If you don't passionately believe in what you do, you can't market it effectively. Most conscious entrepreneurs believe in what they do, but many have doubts about themselves. For example, if you're thinking 'What if I can't actually make a difference for people?', 'What if the work I do doesn't work for everyone?', or 'Who am I to do this work?' this will damage the energy, and the effectiveness of your marketing. What to do: Do the inner work that you need to do in order to believe in yourself and the difference that you, and you alone, can make in the world.

    (2) You must be more interested in the mindset of your client than you are in your own. Marketing is all about what your clients are thinking - their language, their thoughts, their worldview. If you insist on talking from your understanding of their issues, rather than from their language and understanding, they won't feel heard. And they won't buy from you. What to do: Learn from and talk to your clients so that you can express their language effectively.

    (3) You must be willing to take a stand to make a difference in the world, even if it means that everyone won't like you. You're not going to be able to serve everyone in the world. Some people will get annoyed with you when you take good business measures, such as setting authentically sharing your beliefs, promoting your services or products, or charging appropriately for your valuable services. If you worry more about being liked than about creating a business that is designed to prosper, you'll end of serving very few people (and you won't like them very much). What to do: Be very clear on your mission, and work with a coach or mastermind group who can help keep you focused on your goals. When you're thinking about the big picture - the difference that you can make in the world with a successful business instead of an unsuccessful one - you'll be less concerned with those few naysayers.

Marketing can be both authentic and effective, as long as you've done the work to see yourself as aligned with a vision of success, connection and professionalism.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Implement one step from the above list to create authentic marketing in alignment with your beliefs. Email me at Pamela@MakeYourSuccessEasy.com and let me know which one you chose and the effect it is having on your business!

Meridian Tapping Tips for Authentic, Effective Marketing

(If you are unfamiliar with Meridian Tapping, please visit my 'Get Started Tapping' page. We covered several different ideas above, so this routine only mentions a few of the possibilities. Feel free to alter the statements to target your own issues.

Setup statement (tap the KC point):
Even though I don’t believe I can really make a difference, I choose to accept myself anyway.
Even though I don’t know how to market, I choose to be open to learning.
Even though there people who won’t like me if I run a successful business, I choose to focus on the difference I can make in the world.

Do several rounds, tapping on each of the tapping points, using the following reminder phrases, or make up your own:

I don’t know if I can market authentically.
How can I say that I can really help someone?
What if I can’t?
I don’t believe that I can actually make a difference.
I don’t know that all my clients will get these results.
I don’t know how to market effectively.
What if people get upset at me?

When any doubt or concern has dropped to a 5 or below (on a 0-10 scale), or you begin to feel a shift, do at least one round, tapping on each of the tapping points, using the following reminder phrases or make up your own:

What if I could market authentically and effectively?
What if this is something that I can learn to do?
I'm open to a surprising new possibility.
What if this is what I’m meant to do?
I’m open to the idea that I’ve been given all the gifts and tools I need.
What if I can learn to speak the language of my clients?
I choose to believe that I can make a difference.
I choose to focus on the big picture, and make a difference in the world with my success.

Keep tapping until you feel a shift and believe that you can market authentically and effectively!
